Embodiment as Resistance

Do you feel overwhelmed? Distracted? Unsettled? Unsafe?
This is by design. Someone wants you to feel this way so you’ll buy something, vote for something, or accept something. So that, even when you’re not in immediate danger, you’ll react with urgency, scarcity, and fear.
Someone made this choice for us. But what if we choose differently for ourselves?
What if it looked like this:
A headline flashes and it’s as bad as we imagined, or worse. We understand the danger, the suffering, the potential for escalation. It’s real. And it’s terrifying.
This is the moment to pause. To choose ourselves, our bodies, and our awareness.
We take a breath. We notice we have a body. We ask how she feels.
We feel our feet against the ground, connecting us to the earth.
We notice the air and the clothing on our skin, reminding us of our three-dimensionality.
We find one place that craves more ease—shoulders, hips, eyes—and we gently invite it.
Within seconds, something shifts. Grounded and embodied, we can meet the challenges of today more completely. We can receive information, draw our own conclusions, and react thoughtfully and with purpose.
Remember the pandemic shutdown? Some of us who were privileged enough to work safely from home suddenly had time to reconsider our lives. We began to listen, reassess, and adjust. We reckoned with tragedy and inequity and imagined a different world. We caught a glimpse of our own power—and it threatened the status quo.
But before we could codify the changes we wanted for ourselves, our families, and our communities, we were rushed back. Back to the office, the commute, the busyness. Back to being exhausted, overstimulated, and overwhelmed. And now we’ve crescendoed into a fever pitch of chaos and distraction. It is not an accident.
Somatic awareness isn’t about a political party or a moment in history. It’s a way to resist all the forces that pull us away from our power. It’s about choosing to stand in our own bodies, and what we’re capable of when we do.
