Your Body Is Your Instrument: Reclaiming Voice, Agency, and Artistry
Your body is your instrument, so let’s start there.
Until recently, I’ve spent my adult life inside two deeply hierarchical institutions: the classical music conservatory and the U.S. military. Some of you will know that these are not environments of agency, autonomy, or inner authority.
And now it’s time for something new.
Singers: how many of your early musical experiences were about pleasing your parents or impressing your peers? How much of your training was about satisfying your studio teacher or conductor? How many times have you turned yourself inside out trying to meet the vaguely articulated whims of a director?
Now consider this: how might your artistry be different if your first reference point for success is you?
Voice Lessons That Begin With You
Embodiment and autonomy are at the heart of what I offer. With a Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) in Voice and years of performance with the U.S. Air Force, I know what it means to outsource—and what it takes to reclaim—vocal and physical agency.
My work isn’t about chasing someone else’s ideal or fitting into fachs and types. It’s about working with your body and your awareness to find free and healthy vocalism that meets your needs.
When We Work Together, You’ll…
Reconnect with your voice as part of your whole body
Observe yourself and make compassionate adjustments without self-judgment
Build confidence and adaptability across styles
Cultivate presence, confidence, and compelling artistry onstage and off
What It Looks Like in Practice
Online sessions that begin with what’s working for your body and voice right now, and build from there
Self-observation and functional anatomy as foundations for healthy, joyful singing
Flexibility and kindness. If you’ve stepped away from singing, are navigating physical or environmental changes, or simply feel stuck, this is a space to reconnect and rediscover.
Reclaiming Autonomy, Becoming Your Own Authority
I offer a teaching partnership that helps you become your own authority—because singing is about discovering what your body can do, and learning to trust her.
If this resonates, let’s connect.
